The Illinois House unanimously approved a measure designed to prevent acid attacks, a violent crime that disfigures victims with a wash of caustic acid.

Individuals buying corrosive products labeled "causes severe burns" would be required to show photo identification and sign their name to a registry, under the plan.

State Rep. Susana Mendoza, D-Chicago, proposed the legislation to help prevent future attacks by making individuals in the check-out line think twice before buying caustic materials, and carrying out violent attacks.

An acid attack victim who underwent 17 skin grafts, after burns disfigured 25 percent of her body "led us to this bill," Mendoza said.

Chicago resident Esperanza Medina, who lobbied on behalf of the bill, was injured in an attack orchestrated by her lover's wife. The woman who organized the attack was sent to prison for 44 years.

During debate, some lawmakers questioned whether the scope of the registry would apply to too many products and hinder Illinois businesses.

Mendoza promised to address their concerns with changes in the senate.

-The bill is HB2193.

Transcript from the House floor conversation between Rep. Don Moffitt (R-Gilson) and Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago). Time marker 8:50.

"Representative, I know that this is not your first bill...is there any chance that this is your last bill?" -Rep. Don Moffitt (R-Gilson)

"It is my last bill and I will say that I’m very proud that this is my last bill because the women (Karli Butler and Esperanza Medina) who this bill is focused on are just such an inspiration…so I can’t be prouder to carry this as my last piece of legislation." -Rep Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago)

"Representative I think it is appropriate, talking to the bill, because your legacy of serving here will be one of always trying to improve safety. You’re working for the people for who you represent and for all the citizens of Illinois. You always reached across the center aisle and tried to address concerns...and so you’ve set a tremendous example. And I just want you to know that I’m going to vote for your bill but it’s an honor and privilege to serve with you…all your bills…you’ve been a real class act. We’re better for you being here. Thank you." -Rep. Don Moffitt (R-Gilson)
